World Bee Day is celebrated every year on 20 May, and it is a lovely time to make bee-themed crafts with children and talk about why bees are so important.

This simple pinecone bee craft is a fun nature activity using pinecones, pipe cleaners and kitchen roll. Children can make their own little buzzing bee to hang up at home, in the classroom or in a nature space.

Bees play such an important role in our environment, and crafts like this are a gentle way to start those little conversations with children. While they are wrapping, cutting and creating, you can chat about pollinators, flowers, honeycomb and why these tiny creatures are so magnificent.

It is simple, hands-on and a lovely way to celebrate World Bee Day with a bit of creativity.

Materials Needed for Your Pinecone Bee Craft

Before starting, gather your materials. You will need:

  • A pinecone

  • Yellow pipe cleaners

  • Black pipe cleaners

  • Kitchen roll

  • A felt tip pen

  • Twine

  • Scissors

Having everything ready before you start makes it much easier, especially if little hands are excited to get going.

How to Make a Pinecone Bee Craft

Step 1: Wrap the yellow stripes

Start by wrapping a yellow pipe cleaner around the pinecone from one end to the other. This will start to make the yellow stripes on your bee’s body.

You can tuck and bend the pipe cleaner around the little woody sections of the pinecone. These are called scales, and they are really helpful for holding the pipe cleaners in place.

Step 2: Add the black stripes

Next, take a black pipe cleaner and wrap it around the pinecone, in between the yellow stripes.

Keep going until your pinecone has a lovely yellow and black stripy bee body. You should not need any glue, as the pipe cleaners can bend and fold around the pinecone scales.

Step 3: Make the wings

Now it is time to make the wings.

Take a piece of kitchen roll and fold it in half. Cut out a wing shape, making sure the middle stays joined. When you open it out, you should have two matching wings joined together in the middle.

Use a felt tip pen to draw delicate little lines onto the wings, just like the veins you see on real bee wings. The pen should bleed through the kitchen roll a little, so you should not need to draw on both sides.

Step 4: Attach the wings

Place the wings on top of your pinecone bee.

Use another pipe cleaner to wrap around the bee’s body and hold the wings in place. Again, you should not need glue, as the pipe cleaner can tuck neatly around the pinecone scales.

Step 5: Add twine for hanging- optional...

Finally, tie a piece of twine around the bee’s body and make a little loop for hanging.

And there you have it, a beautiful buzzing pinecone bee to hang in your home, classroom or nature area, and a lovely reminder of how beautiful and magnificent these little creatures are.

A Lovely World Bee Day Craft for Children

This pinecone bee craft is a simple and hands-on activity for World Bee Day. Children can explore natural materials, practice wrapping and shaping pipe cleaners, and create their own little bee decoration.

It is a great bee craft for kids to make in May, especially if you are learning about bees, pollinators, nature or springtime.

Little Ways to Make Your Pinecone Bee Your Own

This craft does not need to be perfect. Every pinecone is a slightly different shape, and I think that is what makes each little bee so lovely.

Children could:

  • Use different sized pinecones to make a little family of bees

  • Add extra kitchen roll wings if they want bigger fluttery wings

  • Draw little “zzzz” marks on a paper background and display the bee on top

  • Place their bee on a leaf, flower or piece of recycled cardboard

  • Add a little face if they want to give their bee some character

  • Use wool or string instead of twine if that is what you already have at home

You could also hang the bees from a branch, a window, or a nature display. They look really sweet when there is more than one buzzing around together.

Why Make a Bee Craft for World Bee Day?

World Bee Day is a lovely chance to slow down and talk to children about bees and why they matter.

While they are wrapping the pipe cleaners around the pinecone and making the wings, you can have simple little chats about how bees help flowers, fruit and plants grow. It does not need to be a big lesson. Sometimes the best learning happens naturally while children are busy making.

This pinecone bee craft is a simple way to celebrate World Bee Day, use natural materials and help children notice the tiny creatures that do such an important job in our world.

Share Your Pinecone Bee

Once your pinecone bee is finished, find a lovely little place to hang it. You could hang it in your home, classroom, window, nature area or even from a branch display.

It is a simple craft, but it can start some really lovely conversations with children about bees, flowers, pollination and why these tiny creatures matter so much.

You could also use it as a starting point for a bigger World Bee Day activity. Maybe plant some bee-friendly flowers, look for bees in the garden, draw a honeycomb picture, or read a book about bees together.

Small creative activities like this can help children connect with nature in a gentle, hands-on way. And hopefully, every time they see their little pinecone bee, they will remember just how important bees are.
