Hello, I’m Kerry.
A Little About Me...
I'm a Head of Art with over 15 years of teaching experience, a mum of two, and a lifelong maker. Kerry's Creative Corner is where I share simple, affordable, nature-inspired craft ideas, all tried and tested at my own kitchen table. I also teach relaxed art classes and workshops for children across Surrey, in a yurt in Bisley and at seasonal events in Farnham.
Why I teach the way I do...
Art has always been my lifeline. It calms me, grounds me and brings me back to myself, and I've seen it do the same for the children I teach.
After more than 15 years in the classroom, across secondary and primary-aged children, I've learned that most children don't need fancy materials or hours of free time to feel creative. They need a little encouragement, a few simple things to work with, and the freedom to have a go without worrying about getting it "right".
So that's what I do. I love working with natural, recycled and everyday materials, things you've often got at home or can pick up on a walk, to make projects that feel achievable and full of wonder, but never overwhelming.
Life outside the classroom...
When I'm not teaching, I'm a busy mum of two little ones, so a lot of my free time is spent getting my own children creative and heading out on creative family days, often to a National Trust house or garden.
I'm a practicing artist, and I'm still making and still learning all the time. I've had exhibitions of my work in the past, and although I don't exhibit at the moment, the making never stops.
I love freehand machine embroidery, lino and gelli printing and mixed media, alongside a pottery class, growing plants to use for natural dyeing, sketching and doing up my dolls house. Can you tell I can't sit still??
I'm also quietly dreaming of keeping chickens in the garden one day.
It's slow, hands-on, nature-led making, and it's exactly the kind of creativity I love sharing with children.
