Autumn Hedgehog Craft for Kids Using Leaves
Autumn means leaves. LOADS of leaves. And this little hedgehog is a lovely excuse to collect a few on your next walk.
All you need is some cardboard, glue and fallen leaves. The best bit is finding leaves that look like little hedgehog spikes.
You will need
A piece of recycled cardboard
A pencil
Scissors
PVA glue
Dry autumn leaves
How to make your autumn hedgehog
1. Draw your hedgehog
Draw a simple hedgehog shape on your cardboard, with a rounded back and a pointed nose. Cut it out, helping younger children with the scissors and any tricky corners.
2. Mark out the face
Draw a line to separate the face from the body. This helps children see where to put their leaves. You can draw an eye if you like, or leave the face simple.
3. Collect your autumn leaves
Look for fallen leaves in different shapes, colours and sizes. Small, pointed leaves work beautifully as spikes. If your leaves are damp, let them dry before you start gluing.
4. Make your hedgehog spikes
Cover the body with glue and start adding your leaves, leaving the face clear. Try overlapping them, pointing them outwards or making a pattern. There is no need for every hedgehog to look the same. Leave your finished hedgehog flat while the glue dries.
A little bit of autumn learning
Collecting and choosing leaves gives children a chance to notice seasonal colours, shapes and textures. Picking up and positioning the leaves also gives those little fingers plenty of practice.
You could talk about hedgehogs, look closely at the leaves you have collected, or compare the patterns everyone has made. Keep it simple and let the conversation follow what your child notices.
Happy creating
