Easy Bark Owl Nature Craft for Kids
Updated: Sep 21
This little bark owl was inspired by a rather unexpected start to the first school day in September.
It was before 7am and I was driving along a tree-lined country road when I saw a woman trying to protect an owl on the road. It looked stunned, so I stopped to help.
We slowed the traffic and, with a blanket, moved the owl beneath the trees. I put a message on our village WhatsApp group, and later heard that it had flown away. Such a relief!
Of course, an owl craft had to follow. A piece of fallen bark, a couple of acorn cups and a small leaf were all it took to make this little character.
You will need
A piece of fallen bark
Two acorn cups for the eyes
A small leaf for the beak
Glue suitable for your natural materials
Only collect loose, fallen bark. Leave bark on living trees and check your treasures for little creatures before bringing them inside.
How to make your bark owl
1. Choose your owl shape
Look at your pieces of bark and see which one reminds you of an owl. The uneven edges and natural texture give each one its own character.
2. Add the eyes
Arrange two acorn cups near the top of the bark, then glue them in place. If you use a hot glue gun, this part is for an adult.
3. Add a little beak
Choose a small pointed leaf and glue it beneath the eyes. Leave your owl flat while the glue dries.
A simple autumn nature craft
This is a lovely way to look more closely at the shapes and textures you find on an autumn walk. Let children choose and arrange their own materials. Every owl will look a little different.
